What is positive reinforcement?

In BF Skinner’s theory of operant conditioning, it is described that when a behavior is strengthened by a stimulus, it is likely to be repeated. In other words, what is rewarded will be repeated.

What is a Family Dog Mediator?

A Family Dog Mediator (FDM) has received their certification in the L.E.G.S.® Applied Ethology Family Dog Mediation® Professional Course and integrates its principles into putting the welfare of the dog first. This ensures the dog enjoys a “good life” by addressing challenges through a comprehensive framework that identifies and resolves any unmet needs before attempting to modify behavior to align with human interests.

What is L.E.G.S.® ?

L.E.G.S.® is a groundbreaking behavior model that outlines the four key elements of a dog’s phenotype – identifies the elements of their unique needs, behaviors, and potential sources of trouble in a dog’s life.

Learning: experiences & education

Environment: external conditions

Genetics: DNA hardware & software

Self: Internal conditions

Why should I choose a certified dog trainer?

The dog training industry is still currently an unregulated field. Certified trainers have taken the time to educate themselves on the latest scientific techniques to teach dogs acceptable behaviors without using aversive methods.

You wouldn’t want to see a doctor, therapist, or personal trainer that is not using up-to-date methods to keep you healthy and happy, so why would you want anything different for your dogs?

What kind of supplies do I need for training?

A flat collar, harness (Blue-9, favorite since you’re asking), 6ft. nylon, biothane, leather, climbing rope, etc., your dog’s reinforcer i.e. treats, toy, or scratch location.

Practical Canine Coaching does not use prong, choke, or e-collars.

Is the training process guaranteed to give me a perfectly behaved dog?

Behavior has no guarantee, there are many variables that can make all behavior unpredictable. After all, dogs are sentient beings that have free will.

Our job as guardians is to create an environment that allows your dog to do desirable behaviors for you and them.

What is Day Training?

Day training is a structured customized program for your dog. The trainer trains your dog in your home while you are at work or occupied with other responsibilities. This approach allows dogs to learn essential skills and behaviors in a controlled environment under the guidance of a certified trainer.

What is enrichment?

It is when the environment provides the dog with appropriate ways to participate in natural behaviors to meet their needs.

Where do training sessions happen?

Training sessions begin in your home. Once acceptable behaviors are established, we will start to work on them outside of the home. This might include going to area parks, my personal training studio, or area dog approved business establishments.

What is management?

Management is changing your dog’s environment to make it impossible or unlikely that they will be triggered to do the behavior that you’re trying to stop. Management is put in place so that the undesired behavior is not repeated. Remember, what is reinforced will be repeated.

Why train your dog in basic life skills?

Teaching your dog basic life skills gives your dog the tools needed to handle life in a human world. If a situation arises that the dog needs help from a trainer in the future then having the basics skills trained will give them the foundation needed to address any serious issues. Your dog will have already learned to learn.
